I was asked to present at the noontime residents’ conference at Gundersen Lutheran Health System in La Crosse, Wisconsin. This is an exemplary health system, with a wonderful focus on quality and safety and process improvement. Today’s topic was how to achieve further improvements in the quality and safety of patient care, with particular attention to how to create a learning organization and teams in the hospital setting. The presentation was in conjunction with another set of meetings of the governing bodies of the hospital system, where we discussed similar issues, but at the strategic level.
I used many of the stories from Goal Play! to provide a context for the lessons covered and received a warm welcome from those in attendance, including both residents and attending physicians. I was grateful for the opportunity to meet this fine group of well intentioned and thoughtful physicians.
